Bank account bonuses can pay anywhere from $50 to $900, but a direct deposit bonus only arrives if you meet the rules on time. We checked six FDIC-insured offers from Chase, Capital One, BMO and SoFi on October 23, 2026. Every number comes from the providers’ own offer pages, and we turned the fine print into payouts, deadlines and costs of a miss. If you want the basics first, read our guide to checking accounts. Offers change often, so confirm the terms before you apply.

Quick comparison of bank account bonuses

Table 1 lines up the six offers: the bonus, what you must do to earn it, the time window and the date the offer ends. Look at the Bonus and Window columns first, because a bigger payout often comes with a longer wait or a larger deposit. Where a bonus has tiers or a range, we show it exactly as the provider states it.

The largest single-product payout is BMO at up to $600, but it arrives at $100 per qualifying month over as many as six months. Chase Total Checking pays $400 for $1,000 of direct deposits within 90 days. Chase Secure Banking asks for 10 transactions instead of a deposit and pays $175. SoFi’s entry tier of $50 is the lowest payout on the list. In the targeted Chase offer, opening both accounts pays $900, which is $400 more than the $300 and $200 bonuses added together ($500).

How we chose the offers and what FDIC-insured means here

We included an offer only if the bank publishes its terms on its own page and the bonus applies to a new personal account. The Chase savings row is a targeted promotion, so it is a reference row, not a general offer.

Every provider in Table 1 states in its own disclosures that it is FDIC-insured (Member FDIC), so you can shortlist all six without worrying about deposit protection. Capital One, for example, names “Capital One, N.A., Member FDIC” in its footnotes, and that exact entity name is what you look up. Before you apply, confirm the legal entity named in the offer terms and look up its certificate number on FDIC BankFind. A brand name in an ad can differ from the insured bank, and BankFind is the regulator’s own check. For what coverage includes, see our FDIC insurance guide.

What a typical paycheck profile looks like

Our profile is simple. You receive a $3,500 net paycheck by direct deposit once a month, you meet every requirement on schedule, and you open one account at a time. In everyday terms, that is a salaried worker paid monthly with no side deposits. It is an illustration, not a statistical average.

Adjust it to your own situation. A paycheck of $1,000 or more clears the lowest deposit thresholds in Table 1. Capital One counts only regular ACH payments such as salary or government benefits, not wires or transfers you start in its app. Under $1,000, direct deposit offers are out of reach, and the transaction-based Chase Secure Banking offer fits better. At $5,000 or more in the SoFi window, the top tier opens. Chase lists a waiver for the Total Checking monthly fee at $500+ in electronic deposits a month, and $3,500 is seven times that level.

What the bonuses pay in real life

Table 1 shows what each bank promises; Table 2 shows what the $3,500 profile collects. We use a one-year horizon because each bonus is a one-time cash payment. With fees waived, the value is the same at 5 and 10 years, so extra columns would only repeat the number. For ranges, the table shows both ends.

OfferBonusDeposits requiredPaid on the profileGap to the top payout
Chase Total Checking$400$1,000+$400$0
Chase Secure Banking$175None (10 transactions)$175$0
Capital One 360 Checking$250$1,000+ (2 × $500)$250$0
BMO Smart Money Checking$100–$600$1,000–$6,000 over 1–6 months$600$0
SoFi Checking and Savings$50–$400$1,000–$5,000+$50$350 (needs $1,500 more)
Chase targeted: checking tier$300Qualifying direct deposit$300$0
Chase targeted: savings tier$200$15,000 new money$0$200 (needs $15,000)
Chase targeted: both accounts$900Both sets of requirements$0$900 (needs $15,000)

Chase Total Checking pays $400 for $1,000 of deposits, or 40 cents per deposited dollar. BMO needs $6,000 in deposits across six months to reach $600, which is 10 cents per dollar, yet it still pays the most in absolute terms. SoFi pays $50 on this profile; its $400 tier is $1,500 beyond a single paycheck. The Chase savings tiers need $15,000 in new money, so the profile earns none of the $200 or $900. If your cash is limited to your paycheck, Chase Total Checking and Capital One at 25 cents per dollar give the best return per deposited dollar.

What happens if you miss the conditions

Table 2 assumes everything goes right. Table 3 prices a miss: the bonus you would not receive, plus any monthly fee that switches on when waiver conditions are missed. Only Chase Total Checking carries a fee in our inputs, $15 a month or $180 a year. Capital One states that 360 Checking has no monthly cycle service charge, and we treat the others as $0 and flag that for verification. A fee runs only while the account stays open, so longer horizons change that row alone.

OfferBonus not receivedMonthly fee if waiver missed1 year5 years10 years
Chase Total Checking$400$15$580$1,300$2,200
Chase Secure Banking$175$0$175$175$175
Capital One 360 Checking$250$0$250$250$250
BMO Smart Money Checking$100–$600$0$100–$600$100–$600$100–$600
SoFi Checking and Savings$50–$400$0$50–$400$50–$400$50–$400
Chase targeted: checking tier$300$15$480$1,200$2,100
Chase targeted: savings tier$200$0$200$200$200
Chase targeted: both accounts$900$15$1,080$1,800$2,700

A miss at Chase Total Checking costs $580 in the first year and $2,200 over ten years if the account sits open with the waiver unmet. A miss at Capital One costs $250 at every horizon, so the ten-year gap is $1,950. Its account must also be open and in good standing when the bonus is paid, so closing early forfeits the $250. The bundled Chase offer is the riskiest: failing both parts forfeits $900 and, with the $15 fee on the checking side, reaches $2,700 at ten years. BMO’s range of $100–$600 is the number of months you fail to qualify, at $100 each. Providers with no fee cannot cost more than the bonus itself. The fix for a fee is simple: keep the qualifying deposits coming or close the account.

Which one fits you

You are paid monthly and want the quickest payout. Chase Total Checking pays $400 for $1,000 in deposits, which is about 29% of one $3,500 paycheck. The longest it can take is 90 days plus up to 15 days for payment, 105 days in total.

You have no direct deposit to move. Chase Secure Banking pays $175 for 10 qualifying transactions within 60 days. It is the lowest payout among the full offers, but it is the only one without a deposit requirement.

You want a low-risk, mid-size bonus. Capital One 360 Checking pays $250 for two deposits of $500+ within 75 days. It has no monthly cycle service charge, so a miss costs $250 and nothing more. The trade-off is time: the bonus can take up to 135 days from account opening, 30 days longer than the 105-day maximum at Chase Total Checking. The page states no end date, but Capital One can change terms before you accept.

You live in an eligible state and can wait. BMO pays up to $600 at $100 per qualifying month. It is available to primary applicants in 14 states, and you must open the account by December 15, 2026, 53 days after our research date.

You can move $5,000 or more. SoFi’s $400 tier needs $5,000+ within 25 days of your first eligible deposit, and the first deposit must arrive by December 31, 2026, 69 days after our research date.

Bottom line: for a single $3,500 paycheck, Chase Total Checking gives the best return per dollar ($400), BMO gives the highest total ($600) and Capital One gives the cleanest downside. The targeted Chase offer is worth a look only if you already hold $15,000 to move.

What we did not cover

We left out interest rates, ATM and overdraft fees, and tax treatment of bonuses (Capital One says it reports its bonus on IRS Form 1099-INT). For the cost side of everyday banking, see our overdraft and ATM fee guide. We also left out referral bonuses, other promotions not listed on the pages we checked, offers from banks that are not FDIC-insured, and any relationship tiers. The Chase savings tiers are a targeted offer, so you may not be eligible for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one monthly paycheck earn the top SoFi bonus?

Only if the paycheck is $5,000 or more. SoFi pays $400 for $5,000+ in qualifying direct deposits within 25 days of your first eligible deposit, and $50 for $1,000 to $4,999.99. A $3,500 paycheck lands in the $50 tier and falls $1,500 short of the top one.

How long does each bonus take to arrive?

Chase pays within 15 days after you complete the requirements, and SoFi within 7 business days. BMO pays about 10 days after the start of the month following your first qualifying month. Capital One assesses you after the 75-day window, so payout can take up to 135 days from account opening.

What does it cost if I stop my direct deposit to Chase Total Checking?

If you miss the waiver conditions, the account carries a $15 monthly fee in our inputs, which is $180 a year and $900 over five years. The conditions listed are $500+ in electronic deposits a month, a $1,500 daily balance, or $5,000 in combined linked balances. Confirm them on Chase’s fee schedule.

Is the BMO bonus available in every state?

No. BMO limits it to primary applicants who live in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington or Wisconsin. You must also open the account by December 15, 2026, and use the promo code from BMO’s offer page.

Who is not eligible for the Capital One 360 Checking bonus?

Anyone who held a 360 Checking, Simply Checking or Total Control Checking account, as primary or secondary holder, on or after January 1, 2024. Your account must also be open and in good standing when the bonus posts. Wires and transfers started in the Capital One app do not count as qualifying deposits.

Methodology and last update

We reviewed each provider’s own offer page on October 23, 2026, and recorded only the terms printed there. For Capital One we also read the full offer footnotes. The figures in Tables 2 and 3 are our calculations from those terms and the $3,500 profile. Monthly fees and waiver conditions are flagged for verification. We re-check offers every month.
